Some of the most common uses for polystyrene is as packing material> This can either be as solid blocks formed to accommodate the item being protected or as loose-fill “peanuts” cushioning fragile items inside boxes. Other uses of polystyrene includes disposable plastic cutlery and dinnerware, CD “jewel” cases, smoke detector housings, license plate frames and plastic model assembly kits. Polystyrene foams are also good thermal insulators and are often used as building insulation materials.

Expanded polystyrene can be used for food containers, moulded sheets for building insulation, is also widely used in automotive and road safety applications such as motorcycle helmets and road barriers on race tracks.

Polystyrene is durable, hardy, flexible and inexpensive. It’s versatility means that there is a strong chance you come into contact with it in some way every day.
